Starting at low prices, AutoBuffy stocks multiple ignition condensers from top OE-quality brands for your American Motors American. The condenser absorbs voltage spikes from the points, preventing premature point erosion and ensuring a clean, strong spark. A failed condenser causes misfires, hard starting, and rough idle — and is often misdiagnosed as a carburetor or coil problem.
Ignition condensers are rated by microfarad (µF) capacitance, and the correct value must match the original distributor specification for your American Motors American — the wrong capacitance will still cause point damage or weak spark. Beyond capacitance, you are choosing between OE-replacement, premium, and tune-up-kit bundles that include matched points.
| Option | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| OE-Spec Replacement | Restoring factory performance on a daily driver | Correct µF rating, direct-fit pigtail or clip mount, single-unit replacement |
| Premium / Heavy-Duty | High-mileage engines or vehicles driven frequently | Tighter capacitance tolerance, higher heat resistance, longer service life between tune-ups |
| Points-and-Condenser Kit | Full ignition tune-up or first restoration | Matched condenser and breaker points sold together, ensures compatibility and balanced wear |
| NOS / OE Surplus | Concours restorations requiring period-correct parts | New-old-stock original equipment, correct appearance and markings for show judging |
Access the distributor by removing the cap and rotor, then disconnect the condenser's lead wire from the points terminal and remove the single mounting screw. Install the new condenser in the same position, reconnect the lead, and reinstall the rotor and cap. If the points are being replaced at the same time, set the gap to specification before buttoning up the distributor.
