The EGT sensor monitors exhaust temperatures to protect the turbocharger, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and catalytic converter. A failed sensor triggers limp mode, disables regeneration cycles, and can allow unchecked heat to destroy downstream components.
EGT sensors are position-specific — most diesel and some gasoline applications use two to four sensors placed before and after the turbo, DPF, and catalytic converter. Confirm the exact sensor position (Sensor 1, 2, 3, etc.) using your fault code before ordering. Locate the faulty sensor using your fault code and vehicle diagram, then spray the sensor threads with penetrating oil and allow it to soak before attempting removal — seized sensors are the most common complication. Thread the new sensor in by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then snug it firmly without over-tightening, as the housing is relatively fragile. Reconnect the electrical connector, clear the fault codes with a scanner, and confirm normal operation with a short test drive.
