The biggest decision is whether to buy a bare thermostat, a thermostat-and-housing kit, or a complete water inlet assembly with the housing, seal, and sensor port already integrated. Many modern engines use a plastic water inlet assembly that bundles all of these components, so replacing the entire unit avoids a second coolant leak from a cracked old housing. Drain the cooling system until the level drops below the thermostat housing, then disconnect the hose clamp and hose, remove the housing bolts, and swap in the new thermostat or complete inlet assembly with a fresh seal or O-ring. Torque the housing bolts evenly and snugly following a crisscross pattern — over-tightening a plastic housing will crack it. Refill the system with the correct coolant, run the engine with the heater on full to purge air pockets, and check for leaks before returning the vehicle to service.
