Starting at $87.95, AutoBuffy stocks 4 fuel tank sending units from Dorman, Spectra Premium, and Spectra Fuel to fit your Oldsmobile Calais. The sending unit is the in-tank float-and-resistor assembly that signals your fuel gauge how much fuel remains. When it fails, your gauge reads incorrectly or stops working entirely, creating a real risk of running out of fuel unexpectedly.
The most important choice is whether to buy a standalone sending unit or a combination fuel pump module that includes the sending unit already mounted on the same assembly. If your fuel pump is original and high-mileage, replacing the full module at once saves labor. If your pump is newer or recently replaced, a standalone sender keeps costs down.
| Option | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone sending unit (OE-style) | Vehicles with a good pump but a failed or drifting gauge | Float arm, resistor card, and connector matched to the original fuel gauge calibration |
| Fuel pump module with integrated sender | High-mileage vehicles where pump and sender are both original | Complete drop-in assembly with pump, sender, strainer, and float in one unit — reduces total labor time |
| OEM / OEM-equivalent sender | Owners who want exact factory gauge accuracy and longest service life | Resistor track and float made to factory tolerances; best match for factory gauge calibration |
| Economy / aftermarket sender | Budget repairs or second vehicles where perfect gauge accuracy is acceptable with minor variance | Lower upfront cost; may show slight gauge offset versus OEM calibration but functional for everyday use |
Access the sending unit through an in-cabin access panel if your Oldsmobile Calais has one, or lower the fuel tank partially to expose the lock ring on top. Relieve fuel system pressure, disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines, then rotate the lock ring counterclockwise with a spanner tool to lift the sender assembly straight out — taking care not to bend the float arm. Install the new sender with a fresh O-ring seal, torque the lock ring evenly by hand until snug, reconnect all lines and the harness, then verify gauge accuracy before reassembling.
