Starting at $14.95, AutoBuffy stocks 2 A/C receiver driers from Four Seasons and GPD for the Oldsmobile Jetstar 88. The receiver drier sits between the condenser and expansion valve, filtering moisture and debris from refrigerant. When it fails, contaminated or saturated desiccant circulates through the system, damaging the compressor and causing warm air output.
The most important factors are OE fitment, desiccant type compatibility with your refrigerant, and whether the unit includes service ports and mounting brackets. A drier that does not match your system's refrigerant type or flow direction will reduce efficiency or fail prematurely. Most replacement driers fall into a few clear tiers.
| Option | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| OE-Equivalent (Direct Fit) | Straightforward replacement with no modifications | Exact inlet/outlet orientation, correct desiccant bag type, and hardware that matches original mounting points |
| OEM-Supplier Grade | Drivers wanting factory-level durability at a modest premium | Same manufacturer or spec as the original part, often used by dealerships, includes service ports and pre-installed o-rings |
| Universal / Fabrication Drier | Custom A/C builds or systems where the original drier is discontinued | Adjustable fittings, larger desiccant capacity, requires cutting and re-routing lines — not a bolt-on fit |
| Kit with Expansion Valve | Full system refresh after compressor failure or contamination flush | Receiver drier and expansion valve paired together, ensures both filtration points are replaced simultaneously to protect the new compressor |
Before removing the drier, the system must be fully evacuated by a certified recovery machine — releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere is illegal. Once the system is depressurized, disconnect the inlet and outlet lines, unbolt the drier from its mounting bracket, and install the new unit with fresh o-rings lightly coated in refrigerant oil. After installation, pull a deep vacuum on the system for at least 30 minutes to remove all moisture and air before recharging to the specified refrigerant capacity.
