Why Plug Material Determines Lifespan

The tip of a spark plug—the center electrode—erodes a tiny bit every time it fires. Do that 50 million times at highway speed and you've covered maybe 30,000 miles on a copper plug. The harder the metal, the slower the erosion.

Copper is a great electrical conductor but a soft metal. It runs hotter, fires consistently when new, and is cheap to produce. The trade-off is that the electrode wears down fast.

Platinum is harder. A single-platinum plug puts a platinum disc on the center electrode; a double-platinum version adds one on the ground electrode too. That second disc matters on waste-spark setups where current flows both directions through the plug.

Older Vehicles (Pre-1996)

High-performance builds often call for colder heat-range plugs, and track use can foul plugs in a single session depending on tune and fuel. If you're building for any kind of performance use, shorter inspection intervals and having a spare set on hand is just good practice.
