How to Replace Brake Pads and Rotors
Complete DIY brake replacement guide with torque specs, tips, and common mistakes to avoid.
When to Replace Brakes
- Squealing or grinding noises
- Brake pedal pulsation
- Longer stopping distances
- Visible pad wear (less than 3mm)
Tools Needed
- Lug wrench
- Socket set
- C-clamp or brake piston tool
- Torque wrench
- Brake cleaner
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Remove Wheel
- Loosen lug nuts
- Jack up and secure on stands
- Remove wheel
Step 2: Remove Caliper
- Remove caliper bolts
- Hang caliper with wire (don't let it hang by hose!)
- Remove old pads
Step 3: Replace Rotor
- Remove caliper bracket
- Remove old rotor
- Clean hub surface
- Install new rotor
Step 4: Install New Pads
- Compress piston with C-clamp
- Apply brake grease to contact points
- Install pads
- Reinstall caliper
Step 5: Torque & Test
- Torque all bolts to spec
- Pump brakes before driving
- Break in new pads gently
