How to Replace Brake Pads and Rotors

When to Replace Brakes

  • Squealing or grinding noises

Tools Needed

  • Lug wrench
  • Socket set
  • C-clamp or brake piston tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Brake cleaner

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Remove Wheel

  • Loosen lug nuts
  • Jack up and secure on stands
  • Remove wheel

Step 2: Remove Caliper

  • Remove caliper bolts
  • Hang caliper with wire (don't let it hang by hose!)
  • Remove old pads

Step 3: Replace Rotor

  • Remove caliper bracket
  • Remove old rotor
  • Clean hub surface
  • Install new rotor

Step 4: Install New Pads

  • Compress piston with C-clamp
  • Apply brake grease to contact points
  • Install pads
  • Reinstall caliper

Step 5: Torque & Test

  • Torque all bolts to spec
  • Pump brakes before driving
  • Break in new pads gently
