What P0562 Actually Means

Your PCM monitors system voltage constantly. Normal operating range while the alternator is charging is 13.5 to 14.7 volts. When voltage falls and *stays* below 10.0 volts for more than 60 seconds with the engine on, the PCM logs P0562 and usually lights the check engine lamp.

P0562 is a universal code — it carries the same definition on U.S. OBD-II and European EOBD systems. Doesn't matter if you're driving a Ram 1500, a Honda Accord, or a VW Golf. Same code, same meaning.

One thing worth knowing: the PCM needs 60 seconds of sustained low voltage to set this code. A brief dip from cold cranking or a big momentary load won't trigger it. This is a persistent, system-wide charging problem, not a fluke.


Cause #1: Failing Alternator

This is where to look first. The alternator's job is to keep system voltage in that 13.5–14.7V window while the engine runs. When the internal diodes wear out or the brushes get short, output drops — sometimes suddenly, sometimes gradually over weeks.

A quick test: with the engine warm and running, put a multimeter across the battery terminals. If you're seeing less than 13.0V — especially under load (headlights on, A/C running) — the alternator isn't keeping up.

Some alternators fail quietly. They'll show 13.5V at idle but collapse to 11V the moment you add electrical load. That's why a proper alternator load test at a shop or parts store is worth doing before you spend money on parts.

The alternator contains a built-in voltage regulator on most modern vehicles. When the regulator fails, the alternator might not charge at all, or might charge erratically. Either way, P0562 follows.


Cause #2: Battery Condition

A severely degraded battery can drag system voltage down even when the alternator is functioning correctly. An internally shorted cell will absorb current without holding voltage — it's essentially a load on the alternator that the system can never satisfy.

Always test the battery before replacing the alternator. A battery load test (not just a voltage check) takes about five minutes at any parts store and can save you from misdiagnosing an expensive component. If the battery is more than 4–5 years old and fails a load test, replace it first and re-check system voltage.


Cause #3: Battery Cables and Terminal Connections

Corrosion at the positive battery cable or terminal creates resistance. Resistance in the charging circuit means the voltage the alternator is producing never fully reaches the PCM's sensing point. The alternator might be putting out 14.2V at the alternator output terminal while the PCM sees 9.8V at its reference — and that will set P0562 every time.

Inspect both battery terminals, the positive cable all the way to the fuse box and starter, and the negative cable at both the battery and its chassis attachment point. White or blue-green corrosion anywhere in that path is a red flag. Clean or replace before condemning anything else.


Cause #4: Ground Straps

This one gets missed constantly. The engine needs a solid ground path back to the battery — usually through a braided ground strap from the block or head to the chassis or battery negative. When that strap corrodes, loosens, or breaks, the PCM's voltage reading gets thrown off.

Check the main engine ground strap (usually at the block or firewall), any chassis ground points under the hood, and the PCM's own ground circuit if you have a wiring diagram handy. A $20 ground strap can absolutely cause a P0562 that looks like an alternator failure.


Cause #5: Voltage Regulator (Separate Unit)

On older vehicles and some trucks, the voltage regulator is a separate component, not integrated into the alternator. When it fails, alternator output goes uncontrolled — either too low (P0562) or too high (P0563). If you've confirmed the alternator itself is mechanically sound, test or replace the external regulator before replacing the whole alternator.

This is less common on vehicles built in the last 20 years, but it still shows up on older domestic trucks and certain fleet vehicles.


How to Diagnose P0562 Step by Step

  • Test battery voltage at rest — should read 12.4–12.6V with the engine off.
  • Test charging voltage with engine running — should be 13.5–14.7V.
  • Run a battery load test — static voltage alone doesn't tell the full story.
  • Inspect battery terminals and cables — look for corrosion, heat damage, or looseness.
  • Check all ground straps — engine block to chassis, chassis to battery negative.
  • Load-test the alternator — add A/C and headlights, watch for voltage drop under load.
  • Pull live PCM voltage data — compare what the PCM sees vs. what your meter reads at the battery. A big gap points to wiring resistance.
  • Check for related codes — P0620 (generator control circuit), P0625/P0626 (generator field terminal), or body codes pointing to a bad PCM power feed.

My honest opinion: skipping the ground strap inspection is the single most common diagnostic mistake on P0562. In my experience, grounds account for a meaningful share of cases that get misdiagnosed as alternator failures — and a ground strap job is a fraction of the cost.
