Dealerships run $150-$250 an hour, sometimes more on luxury brands where a "master tech" line item gets added for anything electronic. A steel spring and shock swap is mechanical: unbolt, compress, unbolt, bolt in the new one. Air suspension adds three layers a standard job doesn't have. Run the math honestly. One air spring today at $400-$1,300 installed. A second corner 12-18 months later at another $400-$1,300. How to Avoid Getting Oversold

The most common upsell in this category is a full air suspension kit quote when only one component actually failed. Before you approve a kit-level repair, ask for three things: which specific corner or component failed, what test proved it (a code, a visible crack, a leak-down reading), and whether the other corners were actually tested or just assumed fine because they're the same age.

A legitimate diagnosis looks like this: raise the vehicle, pressurize the system, and check each corner with soap and water or a smoke machine. A bad air spring shows bubbles at the bellows. A bad compressor runs constantly or won't build pressure at all. A bad solenoid leaks at the valve block itself, not at the corner. If a shop quotes a full system replacement without describing which of those tests they ran, ask them to run it before you sign off. There's a second oversell pattern worth watching for: a shop that quotes a brand-new compressor when the actual fault is a saturated dryer feeding it moisture, or a shop that quotes the whole valve manifold when one solenoid coil inside it failed. Ask specifically whether the dryer was tested along with the compressor, and whether individual solenoids can be replaced separately from the full block on your vehicle. Sometimes the answer is no, the block is sealed and sold as one assembly, but you want that to be a fitment fact, not an assumption made to sell a bigger job.
